Veterans Day Celebration

On Thursday, November 9, York High School hosted a Veterans Day Celebration honoring local Veterans.  All YHS students and staff were in attendance and the colors were presented by the University of New Hampshire's Army ROTC cadets.  The audience was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by York resident, Roger Clements.

York High School teacher, Grecia Caraballo, hosted the event in conjunction with the York Community Auditorium Manager, Paul Santerre.  Students, staff, and Veterans listened to the touching song "I Will Stand" written by a band called Allegiance Trio which features Jake Sammos.

Following the song, guest speaker CPT Pat Mitchell was introduced. He was born and raised in Foxboro, Massachusetts.  He graduated from The United States Military Academy in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.  Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Transportation Officer and attended the Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Lee, Virginia.  He served as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Battalion S4 in the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment at Fort Lewis, Washington.  After graduating from the Logistics Captains Career Course, he served as an S3 Plans Officer for the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  He later commanded Alpha Company, 526th Brigade Support Battalion before being assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of New Hampshire.  His overall message was to do something to serve others -- not just in the military but to think about how you can benefit the greater population.

Following the speech by CPT Pat Mitchell, there was a slideshow presentation that highlighted local Veterans and family members of students and staff who have served (or are currently serving) in the United States military. It was a touching tribute honoring our heroes.

Before the conclusion of the assembly, the Miltary Song Medley was played and the York High School Chamber and Treble Choirs sang along.  Veterans were asked to stand when the song affiliated with their branch was played.  Special thanks were given to  Green Leaves Restaurant, Hannaford Supermarket,  Mr. and Mrs. Adriani, and the Altrusa International Incorporation of the Seacoast for their generous donations of gifts for our veterans.

The Veterans were invited to stay for breakfast and to have an opportunity to interact with students. It was a wonderful morning and a great way to honor those who gave up so much to serve our community and country.
