On Friday, September 15 at halftime of the York High School football game, under the lights and a beautiful pink sunset, the athletes from our three spring state championship teams took the field. The fans cheered, the student-athletes were smiling, and the announcer recognized each team with specifics from their championship journey. It was an awesome way to celebrate these teams.
BOYS LACROSSE
After finishing the regular season with a 10-4 season record and securing the number one seed for the postseason, the Wildcats hosted playoff games versus Mt Ararat and Yarmouth on their way to a Friday night State Title matchup with 10-4 Messalonskee at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Through hard fought back and forth action the Wildcats never trailed on the scoreboard. An incredible team performance saw the Wildcats finish the night with the 12-10 victory over the Eagles to secure the first ever Boys Lacrosse State Championship title in Wildcat history.
GIRLS SPRING TRACK & FIELD
In a steady day-long downpour at Freeport High School, the Wildcat Girls Track & Field team needed to wait an extra two days for field events to finish on a sunny day to hear confirmation that their 98 point performance secured the State Championship title finishing 32 points ahead of second place MDI. All together 14 Wildcats scored in multiple individual and relay events on their way to their second consecutive state title.
MATT CHARPENTIER, CLASS OF 2023
Congratulations to 2023 shot put state champion Matt Charpentier who at the state meet, in steady rain, broke the shot put state record on his way to being named the 2023 Maine Gatorade Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
SOFTBALL
The number one seeded 15-1 Wildcat Softball team faced a strong Lake Region lineup in the South Regional Final at St Joe’s coming out with the win and a trip to the State Championship. After one rescheduled game day because of heavy rain and the first pitch delayed an hour after a hard rain storm the Wildcats took to the field at Brewer High School against Nokomis. A solid defensive performance from across the field and a few timely hits on offense - a solo home run and a two-out clutch RBI - were all the Wildcats needed in their 2-1 victory to bring the Gold Ball home to York, 34 years since the last title win.
