Art Mural

Please come take a walk down to the YHS art wing to see the finished product of many weeks of creative problem-solving and hard work! Art students of PAINTING I and ART CLUB worked together to navigate the process of creating a mural. This project was facilitated by Mrs. Costello and inspired by the Aesthetics of Joy a simple and powerful idea: that our greatest source of joy is the world around us.

The process began with PAINTING class students collaboratively brainstorming ideas, eventually selecting one, and presenting the concept plan to administrators for approval. They then laid out the mural freehand using chalk and took turns painting in the large blocks of color. After the overall composition was complete and coated with multiple layers of paint, ART CLUB members helped to finish the mural by crisping up lines, creating some dynamic new "drops", and adding the title label as the finishing touch!

To learn more about BIG WHY's behind the mural you can read the PAINTING students' reasons for creating it below:

  • To create a painting that brings more color into the hallways

  • Color is scientifically proven to evoke emotions of more happiness, and a more positive state of one's mentality and well-being - especially neon, and bright colors.

  • Even simple designs such as a drip pattern are more aesthetically pleasing than a blank white wall and create an attraction to the eye.

  • Having a mural such as this in the art wing will create more approachability to creativity and open-mindedness to allow authenticity and joy

We hope that this original mural sparks joy in those who pass it and celebrates our student's oozing creativity! Special thanks to all the following students for their collaborative effort:
