On Monday, March 13, York High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advisor, Sarah Bolaños, and a dedicated group of students attended the State Leadership Conference in Portland. It was exciting because this is the first time it has been held in person since 2019! Students had the opportunity to participate in competitive events that provided opportunities to apply classroom concepts in a workforce-simulated competitive environment. Competitive events included case studies, presentations, and objective tests that demonstrated students' ability in critical thinking and business skills.
Everyone shook off their nerves and presented well. One student said to the advisor that it was "fun to come up with a marketing strategy on the fly". Students also participated in a Financial Fitness Fair where all were given a credit score, chose a job, and then went around the room to different booths to learn about how they would budget for a car, food, housing, etc.
Because of the inclement weather, the two-day conference is going to be cut short so students will not be able to attend the different workshops they had planned (buying your first car, how to dress for success, etc.) but the good thing is that there are a lot of underclassmen, so everyone else can sign up to go again next year.
