The financial aid process is constantly changing, so students must check with the individual college’s Financial Aid Office for the most up-to-date information about the specific forms that are used, as well as financial aid deadlines. York High School holds a Financial Aid Night after Thanksgiving each fall. The Financial Aid Director from York County Community College comes to discuss the financial aid process in a step-by-step fashion. He will highlight the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the form that all colleges use to determine the amount of federal aid a student is eligible for, such as Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study. The FAFSA cannot be submitted until after January 1st of the graduation year.
The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is used by some colleges and universities as a supplement to the FAFSA to award scholarships and grants from the individual college. The deadline for filing the CSS Profile depends on the specific college or university. The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE can be accessed and completed through College Board at: https://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile
There are numerous scholarship search resources on the internet. We have listed several on the Student Services webpage including the Maine Education Services and Finance Authority of Maine sites. Please seek out possible scholarship opportunities through the parent’s workplace.
Throughout the year Student Services uses Naviance to post scholarships that come to our office. As the year progresses the list is more comprehensive. Scholarship applications are largely done online and the specific websites will be listed on the scholarship page of Naviance.
In the spring all seniors will receive information about applying for York High School’s local scholarships through our online process. These are the scholarships that are given by community and school organizations and presented at graduation each year. Typically the application is ready by April 1st. The same application is used for all of the local scholarships, thus the process is a bit easier for students.
